QueerMuseum Warsaw – archives of LGBTQ+ community movements

We also conduct our research in Poland, following archives in all their diversity – in terms of form, longevity, and the scope of their activities, which include both strictly archival practices and initiatives that extend beyond traditional archival work. We discuss challenges, successes, and lessons learned from past efforts, as well as future plans, analyzing similarities and differences in the strategies adopted.

During our last research visit, we had the opportunity to visit the newly established QueerMuzeum Warszawa, which includes the Lambda Warsaw Archive – the oldest and largest archive of the non-heteronormative community in Poland. We had a chance to talk about the multifaceted significance of this collection and the challenges and importance of opening a new museum.

We also visited the new headquarters of the Museum of Modern Art, with which we had previously discussed topics related to protests, artistic engagement, and issues of representation and inclusivity. The currently presented exhibition, The Unstable Exhibition. 4 × Collection, showcases various expressions of dissent and “protesting objects,” inspiring further reflection on the significance of art and the role of artists in social life.
